The Hausbesetzung Movement of the 80s & the #occupy Movement of Today

In #occupywallstreet, Travel on November 6, 2011 at 12:27 am

I first wrote a version of this as a comment on a Facebook page I follow, but I thought it was worth reposting and expanding here on my blog.

Years ago, I hung out at a squat (a “besetztes Haus”) in the Kreuzberg neighborhood of West Berlin, back when Berlin had a West and an East. I met and talked with the ex-cons, Turks, junkies and radical kids who lived there. A guy we had met hitchhiking (who dressed in women’s cloths) took us up to the roof of the apartment house they occupied. If you had slipped off that roof you would have landed in the no-man’s land, the killing zone, with its mines and razor wire and guard towers. The Wall, in other words, was their wall. Curt’s Latest in the LA Times

LA Times CLNP Map

My latest, a travel feature on Oregon’s Crater Lake National Park in the wintertime, has come out in the Los Angeles Times’ travel section. It’s titled “Cool truth about Crater Lake.”

But as magnificent and joyful as the lake is from June through September, the magic in the gold sunlight of summer and early fall pales compared with the lake in winter.

I’m going to Oslo, Norway. Whee. I’m packing my suntan lotion and beach umbrella. And my night vision goggles. I’ll be there from the afternoon of Sunday, February 4 through Thursday, February 9. Most of the time I’ll be hanging out with my close, personal friends at Opera. But if anyone is interested in going horned-helmet shopping in the Aker Brygge, drop me a line at bobfolder [at] gmail [dot] com and I’ll try to squeak out some time.

Edinburgh Castle, San Francisco

In Travel on November 5, 2005 at 6:46 am

If any of the readers of this blog live in, or will be visiting San Francisco this Sunday, we will be at the Edinburgh Castle at about 9:30 (if everything goes according to plans). This is nothing at all official, just having drinks. If you’d like to drop in and say hello, we’d love to see you.

We’re Gonna Have a TV Party Tonight

In Projects, Travel on October 15, 2005 at 3:09 am

Looks like we’ll be heading back to San Francisco on November 6, until the 9th. During this time we’ll pitch our documentary to The Gentlemen. I don’t think it would be a good idea to talk about the story itself yet, but I can whisper this into your ear: Alien Bikini Monkey Car Wash.

“Do you feel me?”

Apparently we’ll be filmed, which sounds super. I’m attractive and skeletal. They’ll follow us around as we snack at Jardiniere, hang from the cable car at the Hyde Street turntable, laugh fetchingly in the rotating bar at the Hyatt, crap in the planters at the Top of the Mark and wind up gyrating wildly in our tiny shorts at 5 am at the End Up.

Then we do the pitch at a loft in the Clock Tower building.
