I am a writer, reporter, and editor with 20 years experience covering technology, security, business, Africa, Latin America, and politics, as well as travel and music.

I have also worked as a marketing communications manager and editorial strategist for technology hardware and software companies, including content strategy, development of new product messaging, press placement, and writing of bylined op-eds and analytical articles for executives.

Marketing communications and social media

I currently work as Managing Editor for Ready State, a journalism-focused agency in San Francisco, where I serve as Managing Editor for their client, Hewlett Packard Labs, and Staff Writer for Hewlett Packard Enterprise‘s Enterprise.nxt.

I have led and implemented projects, developed and supervised teams and content departments and managed social media programs for (most recently) Quiet.lyGeneral Catalyst Partners, and Qualtrics, as well as TDS|Trimble, IAC’s GarageGames|InstantAction.com, PBworks, Ask.com, Autoweb, Elance, Visa, and others.

I have extensive experience in social media. I have blogged at Morpheme Tales since 2004. I was the founding director of the non-profit Committee to Protect Bloggers, the first organization devoted to global free speech rights for bloggers, and co-founder of the free speech campaign, the March 18th Movement. I have been instrumental in such social media and free speech projects as Spirit of America’s Anonymous Blogging Campaign BlogSafer, Blogswana, and the Zimbabwean democracy blog Enough is Enough. I was a featured speaker at the U.S. State Department’s Conference on Blogs and Democracy.

Additionally, I was the social media marketing manager for IAC’s InstantAction online gaming portal and, as marketing communications manager for Trimble Navigation Ltd’s TDS division I oversaw and extended their social media accounts, including their social network and ecommerce site. I wrote Qualtrics‘ company blog, their blog on Forbes.com, and do additional markting and writing projects.

Artistic & Scholarly

My first book of poetry, “The Dog Watches and Other Poems” is now available from Amazon. I’ve published poems, essays and plays in such publications as Ottawa Arts Review (upcoming), As You WereThe Awl, 3AMBlazeVOX, nthposition, The Bastille, Rhythm, Cirque, Perceptions, Full of Crow, Gloom Cupboard, the University of Michigan’s Cavafy Forum (“Denying Julian” [.pdf], my essay on the Greek poet Constantine Cavafy’s Julian the Apostate poems) and Andre Codrescu’s Exquisite Corpse. Yale Prof. Maria Rosa Menocal, author of the much-praised “Ornament of the World,” used my translation of Spanish poet Federico Garcia Lorca’s “La Guitarra” in her lecture and monograph, “Poetry As An Act of History.”

My plays have been produced at the New City New Playwrights Festival in Seattle, Lord Leebrick Theater in Oregon, and elsewhere. I have directed Sam Shepard’s “True West” in Seattle and Eugene Ionesco’s “The Bald Soprano” in Portland.

I have performed as part of the Big Time Poetry Theatre, and solo at such venues at BackfencePDX in Portland, Advocate’s of Oregon’s St. Valentine’s Day show, and The Marsh, Venue9, and Doc’s Clock in San Francisco.
